the wailing (2016)
The Wailing, a genre film with nowhere in particular to go, eventually crumbles under its own bloat, though the threads it was attempting to weave were evocative ones. The Wailing is an unfortunate practitioner of a cinema of stimulus whereby the film presumes that it is speaking to neither the intellect nor emotion of its audience, instead speaking to their short attention span and even shorter capacity to remember. It twists and turns like a car swerving for the hell of it while driving down a straight, easy road. Just trying to make the trip more exciting? An uneventful drive would be boring, right? The Wailing would have been better off driving down a road of excitement rather than try to manufacture it in an arena that doesn't naturally produce it.
